Owner, Bill Keleher
Bill Keleher owns and manages Open Gym. Bill's devotion to athletics began with competitive swimming in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill attended Georgetown University, where he earned a letter in swimming each of his four years. Bill was co-captain his senior year. The Georgetown University Swim team currently awards the "Ted Breck and Bill 'Otto' Keleher Award" to a swimmer who shows hard work and dedication to the team. The award was named in honor of Bill and his co-captain, Ted Breck, both of whom are still remembered for their enthusiasm for the team and the sport. Following his graduation from Georgetown in 1985, Bill pursued a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Since 1988 he has been practicing law with Modrall Sperling in New Mexico, but has put the law on hold to open and manage Open Gym, LLC.
Athletics and training are central to Bill's life, and to his philosophy about each person's ability to set goals, reach them, and improve. Bill regularly competes in triathlons, century rides, and running races. His notable triathlons include the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon (3 times), the Wildflower Long Course Triathlon (2 times), the Buffalo Springs Half-Ironman (once was plenty) and numerous local triathlons, including an age-group win in the JCC Off Road Triathlon (the fast guys were out of town). He completed the 17 mile foot race over Imogene Pass in 2006 and the Pikes Peak Ascent (a 13.3 mile trail run with over 7,000 feet of elevation gain to a finish at over 14,000 feet) in 2007 and 2008. He finished the Mount Taylor Quadrathlon (bike, run, cross-country ski and snowshoe up and down Mount Taylor) in 2008. Although official prizes are not awarded for the distinction, Bill may be one of the only competitors to have skied down the mountain more slowly than he skied up it. Bill made it onto the podium in the La Luz trail run in August of 2008 with a second place finish in his age group. Bill also still competes in swimming competitions. In 2006 he competed in the USMS National Championship 10K swim at Horsetooth Reservoir and in 2008 he competed in the USMS National Championships in Austin, Texas.
If you have ever heard the voice of some stranger, a fellow athlete, encouraging you as you jumped off the boat into San Francisco Bay at dawn, or as you passed him at Jay Benson, or as you struggled up the Sandladder leaving Baker Beach, or tried to stay on your feet up the Rockslide on La Luz, that voice might have been Bill's. Bill loves training and the benefits of exercise and hopes to share some of his enthusiasm with you. So please come by and check out Open Gym.
